International Connections
International participation in Youth Documentary Project (YDP)
As an extension of the Youth Documentary Project a partnership was formed with young people based at Skateistan in Afghanistan and filmmakers working with young people in evacaution centres in northern Japan. The intention is for young people in both countries to continue to create short films for inclusion in subsequent Bayside Film Festivals.
Afghanistan

Skateistan is Afghanistan’s—and the world’s—first co-educational skateboarding school. Operating as an independent, neutral, Afghan NGO, the school engages young people through skateboarding, and provides them with new opportunities in cross-cultural interaction, education, and personal empowerment. Skateistan's students come from all of Afghanistan’s diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Jake Simkin, an Australian filmmaker based in Kabul, is involved with Skateistan and teaches media skills in addition to skating techniques. He is working with a group of young people to create short documentaries for inclusion in the 2011 Bayside Film Festival. Jake was a former student at Footscray City College. It's great to see this connection with one of the schools that has had a long time involvement in the Youth Documentary Project (YDP).

Japan

Julian Littler is an Australian who has lived in Japan for the past seven years. Fluent in Japanese Julian has also worked as a videographer as well a producer and interpreter for one of Germany's main television stations ZDF. He is a freelance journalist who has worked for a range of publications such as CNNgo, Global Post and The Japan Times.
Assisted by local filmmakers Julian Littler will work with young people living in various evacuation centres in the north of Japan. The intention is to create short films which provide an insight into the recent devastations from the young person’s point of view.
These films are being made specifically for this year’s Bayside Film Festival.

The intention is for the creation of short films from Afghanistan and Japan to continue and that these works will premiere in subsequent Bayside Film Festivals.
International Screenings of documentaries from Youth Documentary Project (YDP)
Initiated by the Artistic Director, Amadeo Marquez-Perez, a selection of the youth documentaries created in the 2010 youth documentary project (YDP) were screened at the Porto Film Festival, Portugal, the Barcelona Short Film Festival and the Melaka International Arts and Film Festival, Malaysia.
The response to the student’s films was overwhelming and very supportive of the program. This initiative will continue in 2011.
